Keith Douglas, author of the novel The Power to Get Wealth: No Money Required, wants to instill the lesson in his readers that money does not define wealth. In today’s world of actors and athletes who make millions of dollars and flaunt it through expensive material things, people have lost the meaning of what wealth truly is.
Born and raised in the south side of Chicago, Douglas grew up in a less than favorable environment. Instead of becoming stuck in that environment like many other individuals, he rose above it, and he says now that, “Most of the best minds come out of the ghetto.” Another key to Douglas’ success was his mother, who he says is his “rock.” She instilled integrity and self-confidence in him when he was young.
Keith Douglas knows first hand about the troubled youth in the ghetto, because he was labeled as a “troublemaker” while he was in school. He suffered from dyslexia when he was young, and the embarrassment of not being able to do his schoolwork caused him to ditch class and befriend the other “troublemakers.” These friendships made him realize that the other problem children had disabilities bothering them as well. Douglas now believes that there is no such thing as a bad kid, because all “troublemakers” have something bothering them. He says that it is very important to discover what is bothering the child, and correct it so that they can be successful.
After receiving help for his dyslexia, Douglas attended El Camino College in California, where he had moved when he was fifteen. Although he was at the top of his class, he decided to pursue his business interests rather than continue in his education. Douglas has been business-minded since his youth, when he founded a pager company at the age of seventeen, which he later sold. He is also the founder of RKD music and talent management.
Keith Douglas’ novel addresses what true wealth is, and it teaches readers to not think of having money as being wealthy. He believes that actors, athletes, and others who have money and flaunt it are immature because they are like “kids in a candy store” when they can buy anything they want. Douglas urges his readers to stop perceiving these individuals as being wealthy just because they have a lot of money.
In today’s economy where many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, some individuals are finding it difficult to realize the wealth they already have. Keith Douglas suggests that these individuals should do things such as make a home cooked meal, write a handwritten letter to a loved one, or donate time at a shelter. Ordinary people have the power to discover their wealth if they take the time to appreciate what they have already.
